The EU fishery and aquaculture sector has faced three very different shocks since 2020. COVID-19 primarily disrupted demand and logistics, Brexit introduced structural trade frictions and quota adjustments, and Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine triggered a major cost shock across the entire value chain.
The EU is a major world market for fishery and aquaculture products (FAP), whose internal demand is mostly covered by import from other countries. The trade between EU Member States is also of significant importance to cover the demand for FAPs in the different markets within the EU.
The trade in FAPs between the EU and Russia has for decades been significant, especially EU imports of ground fish species which serves as an important source for raw material for fish processors and distributors in the EU.

The study analyses the wholesale sector for fisheries and aquaculture products in the EU, with a focus on a selection of Member States.
