Macroeconomic context
Average prices for marine fuel until 19 June 2026 ranged between 0,80 and 1,03 EUR/litre in ports in France, Italy, Spain and the UK. In May 2026, the EU annual inflation rate was 3,3%, while fish and other seafood prices increased by 4,5% compared with April 2025.
First sales in Europe
In 2026, first sales of small pelagics reached 272,5 million euros (+5%) and 353.648 tonnes (+23%) compared with 2025, with sardine contributing most to the increase.
Extra-EU imports
In the first quarter of 2026, extra-EU imports of small pelagics amounted to 279,4 million euros and 103.178 tonnes, up 11% in value and 16% in volume compared with the same period in 2025.
Consumption
Between April 2023 and March 2026, household consumption of small pelagics was monitored in ten Member States, in particular fresh mackerel, fresh sardine and fresh herring.
